Culture media Additives

Culture media additives are the supplements added to a basal medium to make it nutritionally complete or selectively inhibitory. Extracts of meat and liver contribute amino acids, peptides, vitamins and trace minerals that many fastidious organisms cannot synthesise. Because microbial growth is exquisitely sensitive to composition, additives are tested for growth promotion against reference strains.
