Disinfectants and Cleaning Solutions

Laboratory disinfectants and cleaning solutions work by two distinct routes. Biocides such as phenolics and iodophors denature microbial proteins and disrupt cell membranes, killing organisms on benches, floors and equipment; iodophor formulations release iodine slowly from a carrier, extending contact time while reducing staining and odour. Detergents act physically instead, using surfactants and chelants to lift protein, grease and metal residues from glassware.
