Ketones

Ketones carry a carbonyl group flanked by two carbon substituents, which makes them less reactive than aldehydes toward oxidation but readily attacked by nucleophiles at the carbonyl carbon. Practically, the lower ketones are excellent polar aprotic solvents for resins and coatings, while cyclic and aromatic ketones serve mainly as synthetic intermediates.
